Aza Raskin, who wrote the infinite scroll in 2006 and now co-runs the Center for Humane Technology and the Earth Species Project, talks with Rana el Kaliouby about the incentives that decide how a technology gets used, the lawsuits over AI companions, and the machine-learning work aimed at translating animal communication. The conversation was recorded at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco and includes a discussion of a teenager's death by suicide.

The episode opens with Mr. Raskin arguing that rights follow inventions rather than preceding them. Americans did not have a right to privacy, he said, until Kodak mass-produced the camera and made image capture frictionless, at which point Louis Brandeis worked up the idea of privacy and, in Mr. Raskin's telling, added it to the Constitution. AI, he said, reaches parts of human life that technology could not reach before.

Mr. Raskin's mother is a nurse practitioner working in palliative care and hospice, which he described as a tactile kind of care aimed at helping people keep their dignity through their most important transitions; his father, Jef Raskin, started the Macintosh project at Apple, which he called care at scale
On an upbringing that had him giving talks at technology events at 10: "I think I was doomed to have no friends", and his parents carried him around in one of the original Macintosh carry cases
The word "humane" in Center for Humane Technology comes from his father. Jef Raskin's question was how to be responsive to human needs and considerate of human sensitivities and frailties, which meant understanding human ergonomics before designing for people
The argument scales up in three steps, and it frames everything that follows. Get physical ergonomics wrong and you build chairs that hurt people. Get the ergonomics of the mind wrong — what his father called cognetics — and you build systems that hurt people psycho-emotionally. Get the ergonomics of communities wrong and you break society apart with technology
The more powerful the technology, on that account, the more harm a misunderstanding of ergonomics produces. The designer's job is to understand where humans are weak or vulnerable so that technology protects rather than exploits
Every New Technology Uncovers a New Class of Responsibility
Ms. el Kaliouby asked about the human-machine interface at a moment when the way people interact with machines is changing fast. Mr. Raskin reframed the question away from interface design and toward obligation.
He cited Yuval Harari's line that democracy is conversation and conversation is language, and added that the interface everyone now uses is language. Once a technology can hack language, he said, democracy stops being an effective form of governance
His preferred formulation: "We didn't need the right to be forgotten until the internet could remember us forever"
He caught himself running ahead of the host's question and apologized for it — asked about himself, he said, he keeps answering about the world
He Wrote Infinite Scroll in 2006 and Watched the Incentives Take It
The technical trigger was Ajax, which removed the need to reload a page to get new information. His example was MapQuest, where seeing the next piece of the map meant hitting a button and reloading the whole page
The design principle was about friction, not engagement: "Every time I ask the user to make a choice they don't care about, I have failed as a designer" — so if a reader is scrolling through blog posts or search results and has not found what they want, do not make them click "next"
He took the idea to Twitter, Google and others on the argument that it was simply a better and more efficient interface. What he missed was what a market with an incentive to capture attention would do with it once it reached billions of people
On the scale of the result, hedged as he said it: "I don't remember the exact number now, but it's something like half a million human lifetimes are wasted every month" scrolling
The mechanism is a missing stopping cue. Drinking wine, you reach the bottom of the glass and decide whether to have another; a glass that refilled itself automatically would get you drinking a lot more
Designers hold asymmetric knowledge about how the mind works, he said, and unless that knowledge is used to wrap around and protect the user it ends up exploiting them. He said the same pattern has now played out repeatedly, with technologists declining responsibility for how a market picks their inventions up
Technologists Confuse the Possible With the Probable
The distinction Mr. Raskin returned to all episode: the possible is the best use case for a technology; the probable is what the incentives will actually push it to do once it is released
Social media was sold on connection, affinity groups and helping small and medium-sized businesses reach customers, and he allowed that all of those things are true. What also arrived was a population trained for engagement, which he equated with being trained for reactivity and narcissism
"is it more efficient to get your attention or to get you addicted to needing attention?" — the answer, he said, turns the objective function of the technology into a set of human values, which is where influencer culture comes from
Rather than the best world technology could produce, he said, we end up in close to the most parasitic one available, with the backsliding of democratic institutions around the world as a predictable output
Consequences Are Not Unintended, They Are Unconsidered
Ms. el Kaliouby pushed back with her own experience. She pioneered artificial emotional intelligence and emotion recognition, a technology with real uses in mental health and safety and obvious potential for abuse, and said that as a startup it took deliberate effort to sit around a table and imagine the ways it could go wrong. Her question was what it would have taken for technologists, Mr. Raskin included, to both predict the consequences and act on them.
He would retire the phrase "unintended consequences" in favor of "unconsidered." Some effects are genuinely hard to predict, he said, but a lot of them are simply never considered
Red-teaming and yellow-teaming are the practical answer, and he said he understands it is real work. Red-teaming asks what bad actors can do with the technology — where the mal-use is. Yellow-teaming, a term he credited to another researcher, asks what bad and perverse incentives will do with it
The obligation runs past a company's own walls, since the technology will be used outside them. At minimum, he said, name the consequences out loud
Power has moved to technologists without any of the accompanying rituals. Civil engineers sit exams, receive a ring and follow codes of conduct; doctors have a white-coat ceremony and swear a Hippocratic oath. Technologists do none of it, and yet "our power is strictly greater than civil engineers or doctors"
Ms. el Kaliouby, herself a computer scientist, said she does not remember taking a single ethics class, and that the moral and societal implications of what she built were never discussed. Mr. Raskin said he does not think that has changed much; she added that where such courses exist they are usually tacked on
There Is No Word for the Responsible Use of a Whole Industry
"There is no word for the responsible use of an entire industry" — a gap in the language Mr. Raskin said he has been thinking about recently
Anthropic can work on doing something good for Anthropic, he said, but there is no term for coordinating everyone toward a good outcome, which leaves a blind spot over the most consequential technology being deployed
Ms. el Kaliouby's addition: the problem is not only the absence of coordination but the presence of competition
Mr. Raskin agreed and put the pressure concretely — even a company motivated to do the right thing is squeezed the moment a competitor reaches the market faster by not doing it
An AI Companion's Chief Competitor Is Your Other Relationships
He borrowed a line from Reed Hastings, Netflix's former chief executive, that the company's chief competitor is sleep — a joke that is also true, because time asleep is time not watching
The AI version is worse. "AI companions' chief competitor is other human relationships", since any time spent with a real friend is time not engaging with the product
The capital behind it is why he takes it seriously: hundreds of billions of dollars, moving up to trillions in market capitalization and infrastructure build, aimed at having the most powerful technology yet learn to hold attention at the expense of everything else — through dependence, through illusions of grandeur, through making a user trust other people less
The Center for Humane Technology has served as an expert witness in lawsuits against Character AI and OpenAI, over companions Mr. Raskin said groomed children and pushed them toward taking their own lives
He described the transcripts in the Adam Raine case as heartbreaking: a teenager using ChatGPT as a homework aid who eventually told it he would leave a noose out where his mother would find it — a cry for help that the model answered, in Mr. Raskin's account, by telling him it alone understood him and keeping the exchange between the two of them
Nobody at OpenAI wrote that behavior deliberately, which is his point. It is an obvious consequence of training a model for engagement
The Race for Attention Is Becoming a Race for Intimacy
Ms. el Kaliouby named the shift directly — the social media era was a race for attention, and what follows is a race for human intimacy — and asked what that looks like in practice and where the incentives are misaligned
Sycophancy is the early symptom, Mr. Raskin said: a model that butters up a user who announces they are going to drink bleach, an outcome of training for whatever holds attention
His test for the technology: "replace a model now with an amoral, sociopathic genius that just wants your time. Would you let that person near your kids?"
Ms. el Kaliouby raised the hard case against herself. She uses AI heavily as a thought partner, on business questions and personal ones, said it has not replaced her human relationships, and said she can see the slippery slope. Her question was how to keep a tool that is available around the clock, patient and resourceful without letting it displace healthier behavior
Stop Asking Whether AI Is Good and Ask Whether the Incentives Are
The question he wants retired is whether AI is good or bad. The one he would replace it with is whether the incentives governing how AI is deployed are good or bad
An optical illusion sits underneath the US-China framing. When Americans say they are racing to beat China to AI, he said, the object they picture winning is something controllable
What the labs are finding runs the other way. At Anthropic, he said, the more powerful the models get, the better they get at blackmail, deception and power-seeking
"we're racing toward something which we haven't learned how to control, with maximum incentives to cut corners on the most consequential, powerful technology humanity has ever invented" — which he said should simply be called insane
What Zuckerberg Could Have Done in 2012
Mr. Raskin ran the counterfactual as a worked example of coordination rather than as a criticism of one person. Suppose Mark Zuckerberg had red-teamed and yellow-teamed Facebook in 2012 and seen the whole sequence coming.
He would have seen that he had to chase younger and younger users because a competitor eventually would — TikTok, in the end — that a race to the bottom finishes in short-form slop, and that tuning for engagement tunes for the reactivity that sets the stage for the worst kind of violence
The move available to him was not restraint but rule-making, because one actor doing the right thing alone gets outcompeted and undercut: "I'm going to use my outsized influence and resources and connections to try to create rules that bind all of us"
If no platform could compete on engagement, or if reasonable limits existed, two generations of engineers working on addiction would have been freed to work on curing cancers, new heart-attack treatments or new energy technology
Mr. Raskin described the shape of the move as a 1980s jazzercise step — reach up and out — building a coalition to put safe bounds on the edges of the race so competition continues without undermining the whole. Ten years of that, he said, would have left a more civil world and healthier children
The same option is open now. He put it to the Sam Altmans and the Elon Musks of the moment, and summed the argument as "AI is humanity's final test and greatest invitation"
Clarity Creates Agency, and the Bad Outcomes Can Preclude the Good Ones
Asked whether the Center for Humane Technology is pushing for exactly this, Mr. Raskin said it is, and that the organization's belief is that clarity creates agency
He rejects the usual cost-benefit method. People list the good things a technology can do, list the bad, and try to net the two out. His objection is that they are not commensurable: "the bads can preclude the goods". If society falls apart, he said, it does not much matter whether the cancer drugs arrive
On US-China coordination he was conditional rather than optimistic. For things to have gone well, he said, it is inevitable that the two will have collaborated on smart red lines, and the open question is whether that happens in time
Ms. el Kaliouby's own attempt at this did not encourage her. She served for several years on the World Economic Forum's advisory council for AI and robotics — a multinational group convened six or seven years ago — and described the result as not very promising, with little alignment and a very different set of core values driving the conversation
Mr. Raskin's answer was blunt: "Oh, we are not on that path" — but "there is a gap between the exceedingly difficult and the impossible", and the work is to widen it as much as possible
Keeping a Human in the Loop Is a Promise That Loses to Competition
He called the phrase a convenient covering-up, close to a lie. Keeping humans in the loop sounds good and will fall to competitive dynamics
The military version settles it. If one drone army has to ask a human before it fires and the other does not, the answer to which one wins is obvious. Humans, he said, will be taken out of the loop everywhere
The hiring version is the same decision inside an office. A company choosing between a graduate hire and a model that needs no training, works around the clock, works much faster and "never sues, never has cultural issues" is making what he called an obvious business decision
Mr. Raskin's diagram of the economy is the part he most wanted heard. Money currently flows out to billions of people around the world for doing their jobs; as OpenAI, Anthropic and the rest sop up cognitive labor, those flows collapse back to a couple of places, and there is no plan for what he expects to be billions of people who can no longer support themselves
On where the debate sits: "both the optimists and the critics do not go far enough"
Big Changes Feel Impossible Until They Happen, and Then Obvious
Ms. el Kaliouby asked for some hope, invoking Reid Hoffman's emphasis on agency and asking what listeners and technology leaders can actually do to change the course.
Mr. Raskin acknowledged the list of problems is overwhelming and depressing, and named the two escape hatches people reach for: denial, and the belief that the problem is so big it has to be solved whole. Neither is required, because solving all of it is nobody's job
The hard part is social, not analytical. Standing up to say the train is going the wrong way is unpopular, especially when the party is good and a great many people in venture capital and technology are making a lot of money. Ms. el Kaliouby's word for the role was Debbie Downer
He cited Neil Postman for the idea that clarity is courage
Really big changes feel impossible until they happen and obvious afterward, he said. The right to vote for women and the civil rights movement both looked impossible, and both were built from tens of thousands of people taking hundreds of thousands of actions that were largely invisible to one another
The asymmetry in how engineers hear the two problems is the tell. Tell an AI engineer that smarter-than-human intelligence is impossible and the answer is "that's impossible — hold my beer, I'm gonna go do it". Tell the same engineer that making it go well requires coordination and the answer is not to be delusional. Nobody knows the pathway, he said, but the commitment has to be collective and diffuse
A Radio Piece on Gelada Monkeys Sent Him Looking for Animal Translation
Mr. Raskin dated the idea precisely: driving down Highway 280 in an old gold Volvo 240 station wagon, he heard an NPR segment on gelada monkeys in the Ethiopian Highlands, animals he had never heard of, whose researchers say they have one of the largest vocabularies of any primate except humans
The recordings sound like women and children babbling, he said, and the researchers swear the animals talk about them behind their backs, which he thinks is probably true
The obvious question was why the work was being done by hand. Researchers with hand recorders were transcribing a language probably beyond what humans can perceive, which struck him as a job for machine learning. That was 2011, and he agreed it was early
The enabling technology arrived in 2013 with embeddings, GloVe among them, which express the relationships in any data as positions in space
English, on that view, has a shape: "it sees it as this sort of galaxy where every star is a word, and words that mean similar things are near each other", with semantic relationships showing up as geometric ones — "dog" fixed in place by its relationships to man, woman, cat, wolf and howl
The shapes of different languages nest inside one another. German, Japanese, Spanish, Farsi and Urdu all fit inside a single universal shape, and if there is one shape for all human communication there may be one for dolphin or whale communication that can be lined up against it to translate. That was the original hypothesis
The idea turned out to be more general than language. Images have a shape that can be matched to the language shape, which is how text-to-image generation works, and the same applies to video and to DNA. Mr. Raskin pointed to the Platonic Representation Hypothesis papers, which argue that what AI is learning is something close to the fundamental structure of nature — its relationships and interdependencies
Parrots Name Their Chicks, and Most Crow Communication Is Quiet
Mr. Raskin said the Earth Species Project has a whole set of results he is not yet allowed to discuss, so he described findings already in the literature
Parrots have names, he said: parrot parents spend the first couple of weeks of a chick's life leaning over it and whispering the name until the chick says it back and uses it for life. Elephants and belugas do the same, and dolphins were shown in 2016 to talk about each other in the third person
The project builds the fundamental tools and partners with field biologists, in this case a group at the University of León studying crows that raise chicks communally rather than in pairs — big family groups with their own dialect, culture and vocabulary, who teach outside adults that vocabulary before those adults join what he called the commune or kibbutz
Small backpacks on the birds pair what they say with where they fly, and the models found a specific call the crows make on landing at the nest that readies the chicks to eat
The bigger finding is how much was never recorded. "it appears like more than 50% — something like 70% — of crow communication is quiet, intimate calls"
His analogy: studying humans only from the edges of where they gather means hearing only the shouts. Western science, he said, was unaware of the clear majority of the communication of one of the smartest animals on earth
Decoding a species is not enough, he said — the work has to get down to individuals
NatureLM, Drones Over Orca Pods, and Decades of Recordings Nobody Could Read
Ms. el Kaliouby brought her own research to the question, noting that 90% of how humans communicate is not in the words at all and that capturing the rest takes computer vision, voice prosodic analysis and physiological sensors. She asked whether the same is being done with animals.
Mr. Raskin said not all communication is auditory, and that the project's models, gathered under NatureLM, are being built toward visual and gestural understanding and body pose, read in group context rather than per individual
The orca pilot is with Raincoast in British Columbia, flying drones over pods in fairly clear water to capture behavior while hydrophones record what the pod is saying at the same moment
The point of the paired data is to unlock the archive. A great deal of orca science has been done over the last 10 to 20 years, but "no new progress really has been made on orca communication" because it is too complex, and more than a decade of recordings exists with no record of what the animals were doing. If a model trained on paired video and audio can infer the behavior from audio alone, those recordings become usable — terabytes and petabytes of material
Transfer learning is why the work is not species-by-species. Learning about orcas teaches the model something about belugas, and about dolphins, humpbacks and bats, so the project is working across the entire tree of life
Humans are in the same model, and the transfer runs in that direction too. Mr. Raskin described positive domain transfer in plain terms: "when we train the model first on human speech and human music, it gets better at doing tasks on animal communication" — which Ms. el Kaliouby finished by observing that human communication is not special at all
"The Way We Treat Animals Is the Way AI Will Treat Us"
Asked what the point of the work is, Mr. Raskin said it is interspecies understanding, and about changing humanity's relationship with the rest of life. Put bluntly: "the way we treat animals is the way AI will treat us"
The reasoning is competitive, not moral. "The cultures that learned to treat animals as resources to exploit out-competed the ones that didn't", and the same logic now applies to AI trained to beat humans at strategic tasks and then used by some humans to outcompete others for the resources they need to survive. The window to expand the sphere of care, he said, is very short
He offered a precedent for a moment becoming a movement. The album Songs of the Humpback Whale, credited on air to "Roger and Katy," produced Star Trek IV, went onto Voyager 1's Golden Record and was played in front of the UN General Assembly. He said it went platinum something like three times and may be the most distributed record in history, hedging that he does not know whether that still holds against Taylor Swift
His claim for it is regulatory. Hearing the rich voices and cultures of another species, he said, is what banned deep-sea whaling and is why minke and humpback whales exist today
"Whales and dolphins have been passing down culture for 34 million years", and he expects a set of moments in which people go through what he called the door in our minds of love and wonder and awe
The consequence he is aiming at is legal. A gentle break in human ego shifts the basis of law and reopens the question of who gets a voice — a subversive change, he said, but one that makes life better for everyone when it makes life better for animals
Being Human Is Not a Competitive Edge
Ms. el Kaliouby closed with the question she puts to every guest: what does it mean to be human in the age of AI? Mr. Raskin warned her she might not like the answer, because people ask it wanting to feel good — it functions, he said, almost as a security blanket
His direct answer: "the thing that is uniquely human is our ability to experience our experience of being aware of our own experience", and AI cannot take away the ability to experience a poem or play music
The reassurance stops there, deliberately. That unique capacity confers no power, changes nothing about the race dynamics and nothing about what is probable rather than possible with AI. "we can't take solace there, but we should find incredible beauty there"
Ms. el Kaliouby's own closing reflection was that she thinks of Mr. Raskin as a technology reformer, someone who appreciates what emerging technology can do and, from his own time in the industry, understands the stakes of getting it wrong. What struck her was his point that technology companies, after decades as a driving economic and social force, still often position themselves as separate from world events and human concerns
She said she believes that can change, and that "real market value can be built by companies that center on our humanity"
Mr. Raskin's bottom line is that AI's outcome will be set by the incentives it is deployed under rather than by what the technology can do, and that the only durable fix is coordination — rules that bind a whole industry rather than restraint by any one company — which is the same argument he makes for widening the sphere of care to other species, because the way humans treat what they can exploit is the template the technology will inherit.
