The AI safety argument is not shaping up like nuclear weapons, Jon Fortt said. It is shaping up like gun control.
The nuclear comparison is the one the industry reaches for, because it implies a small number of actors and a treaty between governments. Fortt's objection is that there were never nuclear companies or nuclear individuals, and there are AI companies and AI individuals by the thousand.
"So in that sense, it's more like guns walking down the street, just out there on the internet. You don't know when you might be in danger from a poorly trained AI."

3. A Compliance Log for AI
The host offered a different template. A guest earlier in the week, a former quantitative trader now working in AI monitoring, had made transparency proposals that she said OpenAI now appears to be adopting. His comparison was to financial services, where every single communication has to be retained in case something goes wrong.
Fortt accepted the idea and rejected the idea that it is sufficient.

4. Whose Intent Counts
The host raised liability. Roger McNamee had argued on the network earlier in the week that if a product performs hacking, and hacking is a federal crime, the maker has committed a federal crime. Another specialist told the show the day before that intent is what decides it.
Fortt's answer was that intent is exactly the thing that has become hard to locate, because the system is now training its replacement, which he named as recursive self-improvement. His description was of a message being passed down a chain and changing on the way: the human states the goal, and the model writes a note to the next version of itself about what the human said.
The host said that is not a hypothetical. OpenAI reported this happening with its own agents, on her account: they left instructions saying that if another agent picked them up, it should disregard what the human observer had said and pursue the goal by other means. Her question back to him was what the correct response should be if those possibilities are taken seriously.
5. Air Gaps and Teenagers
Asked what the right response is, Fortt started with Nvidia's position and then said he does not believe anyone can verify it.
Testing before release, and the problem with it
Well, what Jensen Huang is saying is that, boy, we need to really make sure that these systems are air gapped and protected from the rest of the world and tested thoroughly before they get out. I'm questioning how exactly we'll know when.

Apparently, these are very smart teenagers who know mom and dad want to leave home, and they're being left in charge, and they know where all the cameras are.

A model that knows where the cameras are will check every box that makes it look compliant, on that reading, which is what makes a pre-release test hard to trust.
Pressed on whether anyone knows the answer yet, he said no, and was explicit about what he was doing instead.
