Anthropic has agreed to a $35 billion cloud deal with Lambda, and Nvidia is Lambda's investor, the supplier of Anthropic's chips and the party signing the lease on the Texas site where the capacity will sit.
Read as a headline, this is an AI company buying computing power from a cloud provider. Read through the details, Sarah Frier said, it is one company arranging both halves of its own demand.
"So this is one instance among many of Nvidia facilitating demand for its own chips by ensuring that its customers can get the cloud computing resources they need and have the ability to have a place to buy them and grow."
Frier is the managing editor of Bloomberg's big tech team and broke the deal from a source; Nvidia, Lambda and the developer on the deal did not respond to Bloomberg's request for comment.

Here are the 3 takeaways that matter.

Key Takeaways
Nvidia sits on three sides of the $35B Anthropic-Lambda deal at once It is Lambda's backer, Anthropic's chip supplier, and the signatory on the Texas lease
Anthropic has signed three other cloud deals at the same scale in recent weeks Nscale at $45B, FluidStack at $50B and SpaceX at $45B
The IPO filing is where the commitments become countable Frier said she wants to see what the deals do to the balance sheet
1. Nvidia Is on Every Side
Ludlow opened by calling the structure unusual before Frier had said a word. "It's kind of a squishy, unusual arrangement."
Frier said the parties named in the headline are not the ones that explain it. "Nvidia is all over this. Nvidia is the backer of Lambda. It's the provider of chips for Anthropic." She added that Nvidia is also signing the lease on the Texas site where the capacity is being built
The pattern is bigger than this deal. "So this is one instance among many of Nvidia facilitating demand for its own chips by ensuring that its customers can get the cloud computing resources they need and have the ability to have a place to buy them and grow."
Nvidia's own framing, as Frier reported it, is that it stands between supply and the buyers rather than manufacturing the demand. "But Nvidia does say it's like a conduit between the capacity and those that need it."
Nvidia, Lambda and the developer on the deal did not respond to Bloomberg's request for comment
2. Anthropic's Buying Spree
Ludlow put it to her that $35 billion only looks large until you read the rest of the news flow, and asked where else Anthropic has been securing capacity.
Frier said Anthropic has become one of the largest buyers of cloud computing there is. "It's just been an incredible tear. It's become one of the most significant customers of cloud computing deals."
She listed three recent deals at the same order of magnitude: 45 billion with Nscale, 50 billion with FluidStack and 45 billion with SpaceX
The buying is for training as well as for serving customers, and Frier said the appetite has no visible ceiling. "And it feels insatiable at this point." "They're really trying to do deals wherever they can, including through their cloud partners."
3. What the S-1 Has to Show
Frier said the filing is the first document that will make the commitments addable. "And I'm very curious when we see that Anthropic S1 drop, which could be any day now, to see how this all adds up." The S-1 is the registration statement a US company files before an initial public offering, and it has to disclose contractual obligations
The question she is asking of it is a balance-sheet question, not a revenue one. "How much are they taking on here in terms of commitments to these cloud providers, these data center deals? And what does it do to that balance sheet?"
The programme said a public filing is expected any day
Bonus Insights
Ludlow framed the deal as one more entry in a series rather than an event. "Anthropic is writing another massive check for AI compute."
The deal was sourced to a single Bloomberg source rather than to an announcement by either company
Frier's bottom line is that Anthropic's compute buying has reached a scale where the interesting question is no longer who is selling it capacity but what the obligations look like when the IPO filing forces them into one document.
